2017 interview Eric Kuster with Roelof van der Veen
Why did you become an interior designer?
I became an interior designer because creating beautiful spaces has been a real passion for me ever since I was young. I believe that you should follow your passions and that’s what I did.
Do you have any interior design rules?
I love to create the ultimate havens for my clients. Balanced and characterful spaces that are warm, harmonious, highly comfortable, well-organised, and sophisticated. For me, it’s also important that interior design projects complement their surrounding environment, landscape and architecture.
Can you describe a signature Roelof van der Veen design concept?
I try to find the perfect balance of classic and contemporary design. I love to work with ancient objects in combination with contemporary art. Art adds interior character and ancient objects are pure, soothing elements. I love to work with extremely comfortable furniture in earth tones. I create your own heaven on earth
You have an office in Ibiza and you’re now opening a showroom in Mallorca. What draws you to the Balearic Islands?
Working on these beautiful islands is like a dream. The amazing locations of the projects with their international owners are very inspiring. Also, the tolerant and open minded way of living feels very free.
What does luxury mean to you?
Luxury means the ability to fulfill your dreams in good health, surrounded by great people
What has been your favourite project to date?
At the moment, I’m designing a 1600m2 interior for a 200-year-old finca on the mainland of Mallorca. The location of the property, together with its historical architectural and design features, and the very creative owner make it one of my favourite projects.
What would be your dream project?
I would love to design a small luxury hotel close to the beach on one of the Balearic Islands.
What does ‘home’ mean to you?
For me, a home is a place that is ideally suited to the lifestyle of the person or persons living in it. Harmonious, highly comfortable and well organised.
Where do you find inspiration?
I am very inspired by art. A painting or an object can inspire me lot. I also love to research on the internet for hours, looking for the perfect picture on Instagram, Google or Pinterest.
When did you first meet Eric and decide to work together?
I met Eric about 12 years ago in Amsterdam. I have worked with his collection ever since. When I decided to fulfill my lifelong dream to create a showroom with a design studio in Palma de Mallorca, I knew I wanted to work with Eric, because together we can create the next level here on the island.
Why do you work with Eric Kuster Collections? How do they enhance interior design projects?
His collections are breathtaking. The furniture is very comfortable with high quality manufacturing. The fabrics are elegant and come in a wide variety of beautiful tones. That’s the standard I require for my clients.
Together we are introducing a new style of decoration to the Balearics; more of a metropolitan Mediterranean style, which ideally complements the islands’ contemporary architecture while being harmonious with their more traditional interiors.
